Jimmy Unger, MD , is a Pediatrician practicing with the Peace Health Medical group in Eugene. Dr. Unger received his undergraduate degree from University of Texas at Austin, went to medical school at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and did his Pediatric residency at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, TX. He practiced with Kaiser Permanente in Texas prior to his move to Eugene in 1996. In 2004, with the help of Lane County Medical Society, he helped start LCHAY (Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth), a childhood obesity prevention coalition. The coalition in its first 18 months has grown to include 100+ members, many of whom are community leaders in the areas of children's physical activity and nutrition. Members include school administrators, nurses, teachers, physicians, public health leaders, parks and recreation administrators, dieticians, nutrition educators, planners, and professors with expertise in media literacy, food anthropology, and city planning. Its three main areas of focus at the present time are: school wellness policy development, community outreach to the Prenatal to Pre-K age group, and improving community healthcare practices regarding obesity prevention. His interest in food policy comes mainly from his understanding of its relationship to the childhood obesity epidemic.
